Tamarac Condos & Townhomes
The Florida city of Tamarac is located in Broward County, about 13 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale and 40 miles north of Miami. The city is bordered by Margate to the north and Sunrise and Lauderhill to the south. It is easily accessible from the Sawgrass Expressway and the Florida Turnpike and is also close to Interstate I-95.
Officially incorporated on July 19, 1963, the City of Tamarac was founded by developer Kenneth E. Behring. Mr. Behring’s vision was to offer the convenience of a condominium with the privacy of a single-family home for active retirees. The first neighborhood he built was Tamarac Lakes, located on the eastern side of the city. The new homes were one-story, one- or two-bedroom homes that surrounded a common clubhouse which provided a great deal of social activities for the residents. Residents paid a small monthly fee that provided for lawn maintenance and periodic house painting and roof cleanings.
The popularity of his concept quickly led to further expansion. New neighborhoods such as the Mainlands and Woodlands followed as the Behring Corporation was able to purchase more land (which accounts for the city’s odd shape). As with the surrounding areas, businesses began moving in to the new community and Tamarac thrived as a destination for snowbirds and year-round residents looking for the “good life.”
Today Tamarac is no longer just a retirement destination. With a population that has gotten younger and more diverse over the years, the city boasts an amazing array of activities and services for people of all ages.
Tamarac boasts a number of parks which provide a variety of amenities and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Veteran’s Park has a veteran’s memorial. Sunset Point Park features a walking trail, playground, and a small amphitheater. Caporella Park offers picnic tables, grills, playground, and a lake with a fishing pier. The Tamarac Sports Complex includes a hockey rink, tennis and basketball courts, fields for baseball, softball, football, and soccer, as well as a gazebo, covered playground, and picnic tables.
The Tamarac Theatre of Performing Arts is one of South Florida's finest venues for live stage entertainment. In existence for over 25 years, the theater features a regular schedule of stage plays and musicals, as well as a Children's Theater program that teaches all the performing arts, covering dancing, singing, acting, and stagecraft. Tamarac's central location provides easy access to numerous attractions in nearby cities and towns.
